Stomach virus or viral gastroenteritis is an intestinal virus that is acquired after consuming contaminated water or food. Various signs might arise that range from vomiting, fever and abdominal cramping.

Even though most healthy individuals naturally recover after the initial signs of the stomach virus arise, young children and individuals with weak immune systems should be closely monitored since it can lead to serious complications.

Nausea with vomiting is a usual indication of the stomach flu.

Nausea with vomiting is a usual indication of the stomach flu. It is important to note that vomiting might persist for a few days. In case there are streaks of blood in the vomit, it might be a sign of a serious complication and must be assessed by a doctor.

Remember that dehydration is likely to occur and the individual should try to keep fluids down until the vomiting ceases. The indications of dehydration include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Excessive thirst
  • Reduced tears
  • Reduced or lack of urine output

Even though diarrhea and vomiting can contribute to lethargy, excessive tiredness might be an initial sign of dehydration that should be managed with increased intake of fluids or intravenous fluids.

Watery diarrhea is likely to arise with the stomach virus. In case there is blood in the stool, it indicates that there is an issue going on. It is important to note that diarrhea might start anywhere between 1-3 days once infected by the virus.

The symptoms typically last for 1-2 days but can persist for up to 10 days. The signs of a bacterial infection from food poisoning strikingly resemble the symptoms of the flu with the same degree of diarrhea.

Can stomach virus cause body aches?

The aches and pain in the body usually occur with the stomach virus. The stomach pain is typically common. Take note that cramping is one of the initial signs of the stomach virus and followed by appetite loss.

Low-grade fever might be present during the initial phases of the virus and can be accompanied by headaches. Even though the body temperature indicates a fever, the individual might have chills as well.
