Chalazion

Fact Checked

Chalazion is simply a small-sized lump in the eyelid. This is likely to develop if one of the small oil glands close to the eyelashes are clogged.

The risk for developing one is increased if the following are present:

  • Skin issues such as rosacea or acne
  • Long-term health condition such as high cholesterol or diabetes
  • Eye conditions such as blepharitis

It is important to note that a chalazion strikingly resembles a stye which is a bump at the border of an eyelid due to an infection.

What are the signs?

Chalazion
It is important to note that a chalazion strikingly resembles a stye which is a bump at the border of an eyelid due to an infection.

The usual indications of a chalazion include:

  • Reddened lump in the eyelid
  • Pain or discomfort near the bump
  • Swelling of a region or the entire eyelid
  • Sensation of something within the eye

How to deal with a chalazion

The doctor might recommend cleaning the eyelids on a regular basis with a warm, moist washcloth.

In case this approach could not alleviate the symptoms, the doctor might prescribe medications in the form of an eyedrop, ointment, shots or pills.

Generally, the signs completely settle in 6 weeks. In case a chalazion has not settled after several weeks, it might require surgical removal.

Self-care measures

The individual might be instructed to follow a cleaning regimen for several weeks or months:

  • With a warm moist washcloth, apply it over both eyes for several minutes. This helps soften any buildup of skin cells or dirt on the eyelids. Gently massage on the eyelids to get rid of the buildup.
  • Place some drops of baby shampoo to a cup of water. Dampen a cotton swab in this mixture. Use this to clean any residue from the margins of the eyelids and eyelashes. Utilize a new cotton swab for every eye.
